Donald R. Sherman, 85, of Sciotoville, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011 at SOMC Hospice.
He was born on May 24, 1926 in Sciotoville, OH to Paul and Frances (Stedman) Sherman. He graduated from East High School, Class of 1943 and on July 25, 1948 he married Faye Frazee. Donald served his country, spending time in the Navy achieving the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa, serving on the LST 947 during this operation. When he returned to Sciotoville he attended Ohio University Portsmouth Branch and also Southeastern Business College. Donald had a number of jobs including positions at Chaboudy Grocery, Lawson Dairy, and the Williams Shoe Factory. He was one of the founders and first President of the Tan Lan Swim Club in Wheelersburg. Donald eventually became licensed to sell insurance in 1950 and in 1953 he started his own agency, the Sherman Insurance Agency. In 1956 he went into partnership with Vern Riffe and formed the Sherman Riffe Insurance Agency which later became the Sherman Riffe Bennett Agency. In 1978 he purchased George E. Kricker Insurance Agency which became the Sherman-Kricker Insurance Agency, one of the largest and most respected agencies in southern Ohio. In 1993 he was the recipient of the Ohio Council of Private Colleges and Schools alumni award, a proclamation from the Ohio Senate.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Donald served in a number of organizational and civic positions. He was the President of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce from 1984-85, former 6th Ward Portsmouth City Councilman, and a 32nd degree Mason. He served as the longest serving Chairman of the Private Industry Council and the Workforce Investment Board, serving from 1992-2001. In 2000 Donald was awarded the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce 2000 Presidential Award.
Donald is survived by his wife, Faye; five children, Tony (Sharon) Sherman of Wheelersburg, Tom (Veronica) Sherman of Dublin, Sue Howard (Mark) of Columbus, Sally Bias of Sciotoville, and Timothy J. Sherman of Powell; twelve grandchildren, Melissa Jenkins (Justin), Joshua (Amanda) Sherman, Megan Johnson (Randy), John (Maria) Justice, Amanda Unerli (Ismail), Kristin Howard, Emily Howard, Patrick Bias, Amber Sherman, Connor Sherman, Nickolas Sherman, Grace Sherman; seven great-grandchildren, Macyn Johnson, Jacob Sherman, Isabella Sherman, Jackson Jenkins, Sophia Justice, Leyla Unerli, Sean Unerli. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Ruth Bihl and one great-grandson, Bailey Chase Sherman.
